On 3rd May 2018, Local elections are scheduled to take place in all 32 London boroughs, 34 metropolitan boroughs, 17 unitary authorities and 67 district and borough councils. There will also be elections in Hackney, Lewisham, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Watford for the role of Mayor.
Local Councillors are elected to help the local community and can influence the decisions made by local government as well as campaigning to improve the quality and well-being of their local area and the people living it.
Local councillors do not receive a formal salary for the position and are often spending their free time around a job and family commitments to carry out these duties. Allowances for the position vary from a couple of thousand a year to more depending on the role and area.
Generally, the monetary rewards are small and councilllors take on the role purely for a love of their local community and want to make it a better place to live.
This makes them incredibly selfless people and they deserve a lot more recognition for their endeavours than they are given credit for.
